Didactics

PGY-1

PGY1 Residents receive a half day of protected time per week for didactics. Didactics are structured to build a firm psychiatric foundation, with topics including “survival series” (psychiatric interview, surviving call, working on an inpatient team, psychopharmacology, emergency psychiatry), the diagnosis and treatment of major psychiatric disorders, and understanding systems issues.

PGY-2

PGY2 didactics are protected for a full day.  Half of the didactic day builds on the core concepts introduced in PGY1 and also introduces concepts in consult-liaison psychiatry and the medicine-psychiatry interface.  Additionally, PGY2 residents have a second half day of didactics each week dedicated to psychotherapy seminars covering supportive psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy core concepts.

PGY-3

PGY3 residents receive a full day of protected time per week for didactics.  There is special emphasis on outpatient psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry.  Residents also learn core concepts in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

PGY-4

PGY4 Residents receive a full day of protected time per week for didactics.  There is special emphasis on professional development, ethics, cultural psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and the physician as leader and teacher in rural communities.  Residents also build upon foundational concepts in an advanced psychodynamic psychotherapy seminar.

Didactics are primarily taught by Boise faculty, with guest lecturers from the University of Washington in Seattle and from grand rounds presenters. There are monthly Psychiatry Grand Rounds that rotate between the three major hospitals in Boise, and providers within the community are invited to attend.
